TANGAIL, Aug 1, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful
Alam today said the government would provide easy-term loans and incentives
to handloom weavers to sustain and promote Tangail's traditional handloom
industry.

"Tangail sarees have received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition...
Necessary steps will be taken to preserve this heritage through technological
advancement and capacity-building programmes," he said while inaugurating the
newly-built Handloom Training Centre and Basic Centre at Bajitpur in Tangail.

The state minister said the government would introduce modern technology and
provide advanced training to improve the skills and productivity of weavers.

The previous government had pushed the traditional handloom sector towards
decline, he said, adding: "The present government was committed to
revitalising the industry by upgrading weavers' skills and encouraging
greater participation of the younger generation."

Shariful also said the government would gradually reopen textile mills that
had remained closed during the previous administration.

Local lawmaker and State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan
Salauddin Tuku attended the function as special guest.

Textiles and Jute Secretary Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury chaired the
inaugural ceremony.

Among others, Bangladesh Handloom Board Chairman Md Zakir Hossain, Deputy
Commissioner Sharifa Haque and Superintendent of Police Muhammad Shamsul Alam
Sarkar spoke on the ocasion.

Earlier, the state minister, accompanied by other guests, visited the newly-
established Handloom Training Centre and Basic Centre at Bajitpur, a well-
known village and traditional handloom hub located in Tangail district.
