RANGPUR, July 20, 2026 (BSS) - Water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may continue to rise in the next two days and cross the Danger Level (DL) at some locations, resulting in short-duration flooding in Rangpur region.
 
Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said that water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern Rangpur division have increased during the last 24 hours. 
 
During the next 24 to 48 hours, these rivers may exceed the DL at some locations, resulting in flash or short-duration flooding in adjacent floodplains and low-lying areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha, and Kurigram districts.
 
However, water levels of these rivers may remain stable on the third day. 
 
Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB in a bulletin today said that water levels of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers have increased during the last 24 hours in the Brahmaputra basin. 
 
Water levels of these rivers may continue to rise over the next five days. 
 
During the next 24 to 72 hours, these rivers may flow at the Warning Level at some locations in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail districts, and adjacent low-lying areas may experience temporary inundation.
 
According to meteorological agencies, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast during the next 24 hours over the Rangpur and three other divisions of Bangladesh and the adjoining upstream regions of Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal in India.
 
During the last 24 hours till 9 am today, 371mm rainfall was recorded at Williamnagar, 282mm at RKM Sohra, 279mm at Cherrapunji, 138mm at Guwahati 101mm at Tura and 55mm at Jalpaiguri points in the upstream northeastern Indian states.
 
During the same period, 91mm rainfall was recorded at Panchagarh, 61mm at Rangpur, 55mm at Dalia, 50mm at Pateswari and 47mm at Chilmari points in the downstream of the Brahmaputra basin.
 
BWDB's Rangpur Circle Superintending Engineer Md Ahsan Habib told BSS that water levels of major rivers marked rise at almost all points following increase in monsoon rains both in the upstream and downstream during the last 24 hours.
"There is no possibility of any major flooding in the Brahmaputra basin in the coming days and we are closely monitoring the situation round the clock," he said.
 
The Teesta was flowing below the DL by 9cm at Dalia point in Nilphamari, 33cm at Kawnia point in Rangpur and 8cm at Tarapur and 27cm at Haripur points in Gaibandha respectively at 3pm today.
 
The Dudhkumar was flowing below DL by 35cm at Pateshwari, Dharla by 62cm below DML at Kurigram and Brahmaputra was flowing below its DL by 69cm at Noonkhawa, 50cm at Hatia and 45cm at Chilmari points respectively at 3 pm today. 
 
The Jamuna was flowing below DL by only 59cm at Fulchhari, 58cm at Bahadurabad, 59cm at Shaghata, 50cm at Sariakandi, 103cm at Kazipur and 65cm at Sirajganj points at 3 pm today.
