DHAKA, May 16, 2026 (BSS) - Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam today said Jatiotabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha (JASAS) should play a more active role in protecting folk culture, artists and cultural heritage.

He made the remarks as the chief guest while addressing a discussion held in commemoration of noted lyricist, Ekushey Padak recipient and JASAS national executive committee founding president Lokman Hossain Fakir at Shilpakala Academy here.

The minister said Lokman Hossain Fakir was not only an artist but also a prominent figure in the country's folk music and cultural arena. He said his songs and creations continue to live in the hearts of people.

Faqir said Lokman Hossain Fakir received state recognition for music direction in the film 'Charitrahin' in 1975 and gained international appreciation for his contributions to folk music.

"People may pass away, but those who work for the country and its culture live forever in the hearts of people," the minister said.

He said JASAS can play an important role in bringing lost folk culture and rural songs to the younger generation. He also assured necessary cooperation in expanding cultural programmes at district and upazila levels.

State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmood Khyom attended the event as special guest. He said Lokman Hossain Fakir was not only a political figure but also a dedicated cultural organiser whose life and works remain an inspiration.

BNP Joint Secretary General and Mymensingh District Council Administrator Syed Emran Saleh Prince, BNP Cultural Affairs Secretary Ashraf Uddin Ahmed Uzzal and Co-Cultural Affairs Secretary Sayeed Sohrab also spoke, among others.
