MYMENSINGH, May 14, 2026 (BSS)- State Minister for Railways Habibur Rashid has said the government is planning to introduce an intercity train service from Mymensingh.
The train will be either on Mymensingh-Dhaka route or Mymensingh-Sylhet route, he told journalists here today.
Initiatives will also be taken to modernize the Mymensingh Railway Station to improve passenger services including passenger sheds, restrooms, public toilets and prayer room, he said.
The minister said plans also have taken to construct a bailey bridge over the Brahmaputra River at Kacharighat area and build three overpasses or underpasses at suitable locations across the city to ease traffic congestion.
Habibur Rashid said although many demands have been raised, it would not be possible to fulfill all of them immediately due to resource constraints.
However, the presently suspended Mohanganj Train service would be resumed and the number of train coaches would be increased.
He further said that authorities are planning to address traffic congestion in the city through proper feasibility studies. A U-Loop at Charpara area remains under consideration of the government, he said.
The state minister said the present government not only likes to float plans, but also believes in implementing its plans for national progress.
He noted that although the present government is only three months old, initiatives such as the distribution of health cards and farmer cards have already begun.
Earlier in the day, the minister visited the proposed site for the bailey bridge at Kacharighat and proposed U-Loop site at Charpara and the Mymensingh Railway Station.
Local parliament members Abu Wahab Akand Wahid and Zakir Hossain Bablu and administrator of Mymensigh City Corporation Rukunuzzaman Rokon were present.
Earlier, the state minister inaugurated distribution of 7,000 health cards among the slum dwellers and underprivileged families in the city, an initiative undertaken by administrator Rukunuzzaman Rokon.
