DHAKA, May 14, 2026 (BSS) - Detective Branch (DB) of the Uttara Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested three members of an inter-district counterfeit currency syndicate and seized fake notes worth Tk 34 lakh along with equipment used for producing counterfeit money in Dhaka's Uttara Purba Thana and Gazipur district.
The arrested individuals were identified as Md. Mojibur Rahman, 38, Md. Dulal Mridha, 40, and Md. Mamun, 25.
According to the DB-Uttara Division, acting on secret information, detectives conducted a raid around 12:30 pm on Wednesday in front of the Samobay Bazar (BDR) Market under Uttara East Police Station and arrested Mojibur Rahman.
During the operation, police recovered counterfeit currency worth Tk 400,000 and Tk 40,000 in cash believed to have been obtained from the sale of fake notes.
Based on information obtained from Mojibur during preliminary interrogation, another raid was carried out around 2:05 pm on the same day in the Bashan Police Station area of Gazipur Metropolitan City, where Dulal Mridha and Mamun were arrested.
During the second operation, detectives recovered an additional Tk 30 lakh in counterfeit currency along with various counterfeit note manufacturing materials, including a laptop, three color printers, a roll of golden foil paper, 200 security tags and watermark-bearing white papers, 100 partially printed Tk 1,000 note sheets, two bottles of liquid adhesive, a cutter, and two watermark dies.
Police said the arrested men are active members of an inter-district counterfeit currency network that had been producing and distributing fake money in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, and other parts of the country for a long time.
During primary interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted that they had planned to circulate the counterfeit notes in cattle markets and shopping centers ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha through their associates.
DB officials also said the accused have multiple cases filed against them in different districts, including Dhaka.
A case has been filed against the arrested individuals under the Special Powers Act with Uttara East Police Station.
