DHAKA, May 13, 2026 (BSS) - State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam today said all relevant agencies must work in coordination during road excavation and construction to prevent waterlogging in urban areas.
"Drainage systems must be designed to ensure proper rainwater flow so that water does not accumulate during the monsoon," he said while presiding over a discussion meeting at the Local Government Division conference room at Bangladesh Secretariat.
The meeting discussed a permanent solution to the waterlogging problem in Shamimbagh area under Dhaka South City Corporation and the Shamimbagh-Kutubpur border area of Kutubpur union under Narayanganj Sadar upazila.
The state minister said projects undertaken by the ministry must bring tangible benefits to people and contribute to their development. He also directed project officials to perform their duties with sincerity and care, said a handout.
Highlighting the Prime Minister's vision for cleanliness and environment-friendly urbanisation, he said project progress should be ensured through field-level inspections instead of hurried implementation.
"The government wants every citizen to enjoy modern civic facilities," he added.
The meeting decided to quickly begin road and drainage construction and renovation works from Matuail Mother and Child Hospital to Shahidnagar intersection under the supervision of the Local Government Engineering Department to mitigate waterlogging in the area.
Senior officials of the Local Government Division, including officials from the Urban Development Wing, DSCC chief executive officer and chief engineer, Narayanganj Sadar, Upazila Nirbahi Officer and other officials concerned attended the meeting.
