DHAKA, May 12, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has launched a source segregation initiative to improve waste management and build the capital into a cleaner and more sustainable city.

DNCC administrator Md Safiqul Islam Khan inaugurated the programme in the capital's Gulshan area through the distribution of separate green and yellow waste bins and polybags.

DNCC Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore Mohammad Humayun Kabir was present on the occasion.

Shafiqul urged the citizens to adopt responsible behavior in building a clean city.
He also called upon all citizens to develop the habit of disposing of waste in designated dustbins instead of throwing it on the streets.

He also emphasized spreading awareness door-to-door through societies, mosque committees, educational institutions, and house owners' associations.

He added that the city corporation would provide full support in this regard.

The administrator said DNCC is working in an integrated manner in various sectors, including mosquito control, canal and drain cleaning, and modern waste management.
However, he noted that public cooperation remains the greatest strength in making these initiatives successful.

According to DNCC sources, separate waste bins are initially being distributed at places with large public gatherings on a priority basis, including mosques, temples, churches, educational institutions, markets, and terminals.

In the first phase, a total of 500 fiber bins are being distributed, including 250 green bins and 250 yellow bins. Each bin is being provided with 100 polybags.

The green bins will be used for organic and biodegradable waste such as leftover food, fruit and vegetable peels, fish and meat waste, leaves, grass, and garden waste.

On the other hand, the yellow bins will be used for inorganic and recyclable waste such as plastic bottles, paper, cartons, glass, tins, and metal cans.

Several important guidelines were also provided for the public.

Citizens were urged not to mix wet and dry waste, to keep sharp or hazardous waste separately, to close the lids of bins after use, and not to throw waste on roads, drains, or open spaces.

The relevant authorities said that the program will gradually be expanded to all 10 zones of DNCC.
