Two deer rescued from poachers, released into Sundarbans

KHULNA, May 11, 2026 (BSS) - Forest guards today have rescued two live deer from poachers and released them into the Sundarbans.

The deer were rescued during separate drives conducted on Monday in different areas of Charduani union under Patharghata upazila by the forest guards of the Sharankhola Range of the Sundarbans East Forest Division. 

The rescued deer were later released into the Charkhali forest area of the Sundarbans in the afternoon.

On information, a team of forest guards led by Deputy Ranger Surajit Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of the Gyanpara Special Forest Patrol Outpost, conducted a drive in the Gabbariya area in the morning, said forest department sources.

Sensing the presence of the forest guards, the poachers fled after abandoning a deer in a pond near Hajibari Mosque.

Another live deer was rescued during a separate drive in the Kaliarkhal area around 2 pm today. The poachers managed to flee after noticing the forest guards.

The rescued deer were taken to the Gyanpara patrol outpost. One of the deer had sustained minor injuries to its legs and was given primary treatment.

Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) of Sharankhola Range Md Shariful Islam said the poachers had trapped the deer in the Sundarbans and were taking them away.

After providing treatment to the injured deer, they were released into the Charkhali forest area under the Sharankhola Range.
