DHAKA, May 7, 2026 (BSS) - A delegation of UNICEF, led by its Social Policy Manager Hasina Begum, today made a courtesy call on Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Barrister Kayser Kamal at his office at the Sangsad Bhaban here today.

During the meeting, the Deputy Speaker said that the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights and UNICEF would work jointly to protect children’s rights in Bangladesh.

He noted that a caucus would be formed comprising chairpersons of relevant parliamentary standing committees, as well as members of both the treasury and opposition benches, to safeguard children’s interests and formulate child-friendly policies, said a press release.

He expressed hope that the caucus would play a significant role in raising discussions on child rights in parliament and increasing budgetary allocations in this sector.

Barrister Kayser Kamal also said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is highly sensitive to child rights issues.

He added that necessary directives have been given to allow children to attend and observe parliamentary sessions from the gallery.

Kayser Kamal expressed optimism that, through collaboration with various organizations and implementation of relevant programs, Bangladesh would emerge as a leading example in promoting child rights in the subcontinent.

The UNICEF delegation informed that they have successfully worked to include ten priority child rights—covering health, education, and protection—into the election manifestos of various political parties.

The delegation members praised the government’s timely measures in addressing the ongoing measles situation.

Issues related to child rights, formulation of child-friendly policies, increased budgetary allocation, social protection, and various bilateral cooperation initiatives were discussed during the meeting.

Concerned officials from the Parliament Secretariat were present on the occasion.
