COX'S BAZAR, May 6, 2026 (BSS) - Chairman of the Bangladesh Press Council Justice A K M Abdul Hakim has said a database of journalists is being prepared in every district of the country, with verification of lists from 33 districts already underway.

He made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a views-exchange meeting at Cox's Bazar Press Club in Cox's Bazar tonight.

Hakim said a few unethical journalists should not tarnish the reputation of the entire profession. 

He stressed that journalists must be more aware of their rights and called for modernising the Press Council Act 1974.

He also said division among journalists weakens the profession and urged unity and professionalism. 

He added that a proposal to amend the law has already been submitted and acknowledged institutional limitations in fully implementing mandates.

Speaking as special guest, Secretary of the Bangladesh Press Council Abdus Sabur said the council acts as a guardian for journalists, while the Press Institute of Bangladesh provides training to improve professional skills.

The meeting was presided over by Cox's Bazar Press Club President Mahbubur Rahman.
