DHAKA, May 06, 2026 (BSS)- Nitai Roy Chowdhury was born on January 7, 1949 in a renowned family at Hatbaria village under Mohammadpur Upazila in Magura district. He spent his childhood and juvenile period in his own native village.
He completed his secondary education (SSC) with distinction from Alokdia Pukhuria High School and Higher Secondary (HSC) from Magura Government College. He later obtained his M.A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Dhaka and engaged himself in the legal profession.
During his university life, he served as the General Secretary of the Biplobi Chhatra Union and also carried out responsibilities as its President also.
Beside his legal career, he became actively involved in politics. In 1988, he was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the first time from the Magura-2 constituency in the Fourth National Parliamentary Election. Later, he served as a full Minister after holding the position of State Minister for Law. He also served as State Minister for Youth and Sports along with the responsibility of State Minister for the Ministry of Education in 1990.
He has also served as the Chairman of the Magura District Council.
In his vibrant political career, he is currently serving as the Vice Chairman of the BNP. In the 13th National Parliamentary Election he was elected MP from the Magura-2 constituency and took oath as the Minister of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs on February 17, 2026.
His expertise in law, justice and civil rights has been highly regarded in parliamentary activities. Throughout his long political and professional career, he has made significant contribution to social development, public service, expansion of educational access and enhancing communication infrastructure.
Over four decades, he remained actively involved in public welfare activities and established himself as a devoted public leader.
In his personal life, he was married to Jhumur Roy Chowdhury. He is the father of two sons and three daughters. His daughter, Nipun Roy Chowdhury, serves as a member of the Central Executive Committee of the BNP and represents the party as a Member of Parliament for the reserved women’s seats in the 13th National Parliament.
His son, Debashish Roy Chowdhury, is a Justice at the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh and his other son, Mithun Roy Chowdhury, is serving as Joint Convener of the Magura District BNP.
