NETROKONA, May 5, 2026 (BSS) - The government has assured continued emergency support and rehabilitation assistance for farmers affected by heavy rainfall and water logging in haor areas of northern Bangladesh, officials said on Tuesday.
During an inspection visit to flood-affected haor regions of Kalmakanda upazila in Netrokona district, Director General of the Disaster Management Department Rezwanur Rahman said the government stands firmly beside affected farmers and will provide three months of special rehabilitation assistance.
He said the Prime Minister has been closely monitoring the situation since the onset of heavy rainfall in affected districts, including Sunamganj, Kishoreganj and Netrokona districts.
“The government will provide assistance for the next three months through GR Cash and GR Rice under the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief. Implementation has already begun in some districts,” he said.
He added that high-level government officials are actively monitoring the disaster response at the field level.
During his visit, the Director General inspected several severely affected haor and canal areas, including Chikon Matia, Telenga, Medi Beel, Damdama Canal, and Goradoba. He also visited Kharnai and Barakhapan unions of Kalmakanda upazila and spoke with local farmers, assuring them of swift support measures.
He directed the local administration to quickly prepare a verified list of affected households to ensure timely distribution of relief and rehabilitation assistance. “Relief will be delivered promptly based on the list. The Agriculture Ministry will also take necessary supportive measures,” he said.
Local officials accompanying the visit included the District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md. Ruhul Amin, Kalmakanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer SM Mikail Islam, Upazila Agriculture Officer Krishibid Md. Saiful Islam, and Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Mominul Islam. Local representatives and community leaders were also present during the inspection.
