Suspect held for hacking VC's WhatsApp to commit fraud

DHAKA, May 5, 2026 (BSS) - The Cyber Police Center (CPC) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a member of a fraud ring for hacking a university vice chancellor's WhatsApp account and using it to scam money.

The suspect, Rihad Hasan (23), was arrested during a drive in Jhenaidah, according to a CID press release.

The CID officials said he hacked WhatsApp accounts and impersonated victims to request money, mainly to fund online gambling. Around 40 illegal gambling apps were found on his mobile phone.

According to the case, a university official received a WhatsApp message appearing to be from the vice chancellor, requesting urgent money transfer via mobile banking.

Trusting the message, the victim sent Taka 55,000 before later confirming the account had been hacked.

The CID officials said the accused confessed to involvement in the fraud and gambling activities.

A case has been filed under the Cyber Security Ordinance 2025, and efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the syndicate.

The authorities have urged the public to verify requests before making financial transactions.
