DSCC declares first Saturday of every month as 'Cleaning Day' to prevent dengue

DHAKA, May 4, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has declared the first Saturday of every month as 'Cleaning Day' to prevent dengue and chikungunya and ensure a cleaner city environment.
The first official observance will begin on May 9.

The announcement was made by DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md. Abul Salam at a dengue and chikungunya prevention meeting at the Nagar Bhaban conference room.

He said the initiative is aimed at strengthening the weekly cleanliness programme announced by the Prime Minister.

Under the plan, all government institutions, residential areas, educational institutions, RAJUK zones, REHAB areas and private plots under DSCC will conduct cleaning activities independently and take steps to destroy mosquito breeding sites.

The meeting also decided to ensure quality insecticides, proper application, regular monitoring and training of workers involved in mosquito control.

The administrator said public awareness and cleanliness are the most effective tools to combat dengue and chikungunya.

"If institutions and residents keep their surroundings clean, mosquito-borne diseases can be significantly reduced," he said.

He warned that negligence in mosquito control activities would not be tolerated and instructed all concerned to act responsibly.

He also urged media outlets to highlight public awareness messages alongside regular coverage.
Representatives from the Directorate General of Health Services, Dhaka Metropolitan Police, BGB, Islamic Foundation, Bangladesh Railway, education authorities, and Jagannath University attended the meeting.

DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Zahirul Islam and senior officials were also present.
