Seminar marks historian Dr Abdul Karim's 98th birth anniv

DHAKA, May 3, 2026 (BSS) - A special seminar was held to mark the 98th birth anniversary of historian Dr Abdul Karim at the seminar room of the Department of Archaeology in the capital today.

The event was organised by the Department of Archaeology under the initiative of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. 

A keynote paper titled "Life and Works of Professor Dr Abdul Karim" was presented by the Deputy Director (Publication) of the Department Dr Md Ataur Rahman.

Director General (Additional Secretary) of the Department of Archaeology Sabina Alam attended the event as the chief guest. In her speech, she said Prof Dr Abdul Karim reconstructed history based on inscriptions, coins and contemporary documents rather than relying on myths or legends. She noted that his evidence-based research significantly enriched the history of Bengal.

The chief discussant, former professor of History Department at Dhaka University Dr Sharif Uddin Ahmed, shared emotional recollections, saying he felt proud to have been a direct student of Dr. Abdul Karim. He highlighted the historian's commitment to factual accuracy, hard work and uncompromising dedication to truth, which he described as rare in contemporary historical practice.

Joint Secretary (Admin) of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Md Billal Hossain Khan thanked all concerned for organising the programme marking the 98th birth anniversary of the eminent scholar. He expressed hope that such commendable initiatives would continue on a larger scale in the future.

The seminar, moderated by the Assistant Director (Publication) of the Department of Archaeology Md Golam Ferdous, was attended by teachers, researchers and representatives from various universities and organisations across the country.
