DHAKA, May 2, 2026 (BSS) – A 33-year-old man, identified as Al Mukabbir  Ornob, died on the spot after reportedly falling from the roof of an 11-storey building in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, police said.

According to Muhammad Saiful Islam, Officer-in-charge (OC) of Dhanmondi Police Station, the incident took place between 11:40am and 12:00pm today.

Ornob fell from the roof of a building at House 31, Road 11 in Dhanmondi and was found dead at the scene.

His body was later recovered and sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

The OC said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after investigation. Sub-Inspector Rajibul Islam has been appointed as the investigation officer.

Family sources said Ornob lived in his own flat in the same 11-storey building along with his younger sister. He was involved in managing his late father Rafiqul Islam’s business affairs.

Rafiqul Islam, former additional director general of Immigration and Passport, died in 2017. Ornob’s mother, Advocate Halima Khatun, lives separately in a rented flat at Dhanmondi, while his elder sister resides in London.

Ornob was also overseeing Rafiqul Islam School and College at Abdul Latif Bhuiyan Road in Matuail New Town, Dhaka, Rafiqul Islam College in Nilganj in Kishoreganj  and Umed Ali Bhuiyan High School at Akubpur in Kishoreganj founded by his father.

Speaking to BSS, Ornob’s maternal aunt Shahnaz Begum provided details about him.

She has alleged that he was killed, saying there was no reason for his suicide.

His maternal uncle, Australian expatriate Sharowar Hossain, also told BSS over phone that they suspect it was a planned murder, stating that Ornob was physically and mentally fit.

He added, “There was no reason for him to commit suicide. We want the real truth to come out.”

He further alleged that the incident may be linked to disputes over substantial family properties left by Ornob’s father, including two flats in Dhanmondi and Uttara, a five-storey building in Mirbagh, Nayatola in Moghbazar and large properties in Tarail and Sadar areas of Kishoreganj.
