DHAKA, May 1, 2026 (BSS)- Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury is a senior Bangladeshi politician and noted economic policy expert, currently serving as the Minister of Finance and Planning since February 17, 2026.
According to a handout issued by the Press Information Department (PID), Mr Khosru - a Member of Parliament and Standing Committee Member of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)- has extensive experience in fiscal policy, trade diplomacy, capital markets, and economic governance.
He was elected first to the Jatiya Sangsad in 1991 and was re-elected multiple times as parliament member.
He served as Minister of Commerce from 2001 to 2004. During this tenure, he represented Bangladesh in several key negotiations of the World Trade Organization (WTO), including the Doha and Cancun Ministerial Conferences.
He emerged as a strong advocate for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and hosted the pre-Cancun LDC Ministerial Conference in Dhaka, which adopted the “Dhaka Declaration.”
Born on February 20, 1950, in Chattogram, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury comes from a distinguished political family. His father, Mahmudunnabi Chowdhury, was a minister and legislator during the East Pakistan period. He completed his undergraduate studies at Chattogram College and later pursued professional studies in accountancy in the United Kingdom, building a strong foundation in finance and economic management.
As Finance and Planning Minister, he is responsible for overseeing national fiscal policy, budget formulation, public finance management, and economic planning.
Beyond politics, he has had a distinguished career linking public service with private sector leadership. He is the Founder Chairman of the Chittagong Stock Exchange, a former President of the Chattogram Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the first President of the Federation of South Asian Stock Exchanges. He has played a pioneering role in developing Bangladesh’s capital market and regional financial infrastructure.
Widely regarded for his depth of experience and international exposure, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury remains a key figure in the country’s economic policymaking, combining political leadership with practical expertise in trade, finance, and institutional reform.
