DHAKA, April 29, 2026 (BSS) - The 29th founding anniversary of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) will be observed tomorrow with due festivity.
Marking the day, the university authorities have undertaken various programmes, including a rally and a tree plantation drive.
The institution was originally established in December 1965 as the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR) under Dhaka University.
In 1998, the then government upgraded it to an autonomous medical university to expand higher medical education and research facilities in the country.
Later, on April 13, 2025, the interim government renamed the institution as Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) through an ordinance.
Currently, the university offers postgraduate and diploma degrees in different branches of medical science.
It also introduced the country's first undergraduate and postgraduate nursing faculty at the university level and remains affiliated with national nursing education and research institutions.
The university runs a 750-bed hospital for treatment and research, alongside a super-specialised hospital.
As part of the observance, a rally will be brought out at 8:30 am from in front of Block-B of the university.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. F. M. Siddiqui is expected to attend the programme as the chief guest.
