WB representative calls on Environment Minister

DHAKA, April 27, 2026 (BSS) - World Bank (WB) Division Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan Jean Pesme today paid a courtesy call on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo at his secretariat office.

State Minister Shaikh Faridul Islam was also present at the meeting.

During the discussion, topics included environmental protection and sustainable development in Bangladesh, pollution control, increased use of renewable energy, progress of ongoing World Bank projects and capacity development of the Department of Environment.

They also exchanged views on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in monitoring air and water pollution. Both sides emphasized strengthening mutual cooperation in environmental protection.

The minister said that Bangladesh is moving forward in environmental development and addressing climate change risks through projects supported by the World Bank. He stated that these projects will be implemented on a priority basis as quickly as possible.

The World Bank divisional director expressed hope that the projects would progress rapidly. 

He said the World Bank is interested in supporting new sectors aligned with the government's priority programs, if investment is needed. 

In particular, they are willing to work on green job creation, pollution control and strengthening environmental protection capacity, he said.

He further stated that sustainable development is not possible without environmental protection. Therefore, ensuring proper use of investment and financing in this sector is essential. 

In response, the minister said that the ministry would make its best efforts to properly utilize World Bank loan assistance and would seek World Bank advice when necessary.

Senior officials of the ministry and environmental experts from the World Bank were present at the meeting.
