DHAKA, April 26, 2026 (BSS) - The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has taken a new initiative to preserve the memory of renowned Islamic scholar Allama Muhammadullah Hafezzi Huzur by renaming a key road in one of the city’s busiest historic areas.

The newly named “Muhammadullah Hafezzi Huzur Sarak” was formally inaugurated today by DSCC Administrator and freedom fighter Md Abdus Salam.

The newly renamed 530-metre street, stretching from Bangabazar intersection to Gulistan Golap Shah Mazar, was previously known as “Phoenix Road.” The renaming was completed through the unveiling of a new signboard.

The inauguration ceremony drew a huge presence of local residents, religious leaders, and members of the public, creating a festive atmosphere along both sides of the road.

Speaking as the chief guest, the DSCC Administrator said that Allama Hafezzi Huzur was a distinguished Islamic scholar, thinker, and social reformer whose contributions to religious education, moral development, and the promotion of Islamic values are widely recognised.

“It is a matter of pride for us to rename this road after such an influential personality. His life and ideals will inspire future generations toward morality and humanity,” he added.

He noted that the initiative followed long-standing demands and recommendations from local residents and religious leaders and was implemented with the approval and guidance of the highest levels of the government.

The administrator also emphasised public health issues during the event, particularly the need for early preparedness against dengue and chikungunya ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

He urged city dwellers to remain vigilant in preventing the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes by ensuring that no stagnant water accumulates in or around homes, rooftops, flower pots, or other containers.

Regarding mosquito control efforts, he said the approval process for effective and authorised insecticides is underway, and tenders have already been initiated for procuring modern fogging machines. He added that the present administration is prioritising public safety and health while overcoming past limitations.

Senior officials of the DSCC, elected representatives from various wards, local dignitaries, religious leaders, and a large number of residents attended the event. The inaugural function concluded with prayers seeking peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the nation.
