DHAKA, Apr 25, 2026 (BSS) - Hormone-related health problems are silently reaching epidemic proportions in Bangladesh, with nearly half of the population affected by some form of hormonal disorder, according to medical experts.
The concerns were highlighted at a thyroid hormone testing camp and discussion session held at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) in Segunbagicha here, organized with the support of Renata PLC and the Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and Diabetologists of Bangladesh (ACEDB).
Specialist doctors emphasized that lack of awareness and proper knowledge prevents many individuals from seeking timely medical care.
They warned that hormone-related diseases often act as “silent killers,” contributing to conditions such as obesity, weakness, reproductive health issues, infertility, and sexual dysfunction.
Speakers at the event called for the establishment of specialized hospitals or endocrine institutes to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders.
Professor Dr. Md. Farid Uddin, President of ACEDB, stated as chief guest that at least five crore people in Bangladesh are at risk of thyroid disorders.
He noted that early detection and appropriate treatment can significantly reduce the future complications.
Uddin also stressed the importance of raising public awareness to reduce social and familial burdens caused by these diseases.
“Nearly all hormone-related conditions are treatable in Bangladesh,” he said, adding that government hospitals already provide care for diabetes, thyroid, and other endocrine disorders.
Experts further noted that most hormonal diseases are preventable through lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and stress management.
The event was chaired by DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and attended by prominent medical professionals, including Professor Dr. Indrajit Prasad, head of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Dhaka Medical College, and Professor Dr. AKM Aminul Islam, head of the Endocrinology Department at Sir Salimullah Medical College, along with other officials and representatives.
DRU vice-president Mahde Azad Masum, acting general secretary Mohammed Jafar Iqbal and finance secretary Niaz Mahmud Sohel were present, among others.
