Two arrested for online fraud worth nearly Tk 4m

DHAKA, April 23, 2026 (BSS) - The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police have arrested two people on charges of embezzling nearly Taka 4 million by luring victims with promises of easy online income.

According to a press release, one suspect was arrested late last night from the Natun Rasta area under Hazaribagh Thana by the CID Dhaka Metro East Unit.

On the same night, another suspect was arrested from the Priyangan Shopping Center area under New Market Thana. During the drive, law enforcement officials seized mobile phones and SIM cards used in the online fraudulent activities.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Sajjad Hossain (33) and Md. Rajib Khan (33).

CID sources said that on July 1, 2025, a victim from Motijheel came into contact with an account named “Sabrina Islam” via the messaging platform Telegram. The account offered the victim an opportunity to earn money easily from online and proposed working on a platform called “Atomic Market.”

Trusting the offer, the victim opened an account and initially invested small amounts. The fraudsters provided commissions and bonuses at the beginning to build credibility. As the victim gained confidence, he was encouraged to invest larger sums through various bank accounts and mobile financial services.

Later, although a large profit was displayed in the victim’s account, he was asked to pay the additional fees such as “security fees,” “service charges,” and “NFT score enhancement fees” to withdraw the money. The victim complied with these demands.

In this manner, the fraud ring gradually embezzled a total of Taka 39,56,469 from the victim.

When the victim eventually attempted to withdraw the funds, the fraudsters delayed the process with various excuses and ultimately cut off all communication. Realizing that he had been cheated, the victim filed a case with Motijheel Police Station in this connection.

The arrested suspects have already been sent to court with a request for granting police remand.
