Ex-DGFI director Afzal Naser remanded in fresh uprising case

DHAKA, April 23, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today placed former DGFI director and dismissed Lieutenant Colonel Md Afzal Naser on a four-day remand in a case lodged over the killing of one Mahmudul Hasan in Uttara area during the July Mass Uprising, 2024.

Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah passed the order as police produced Naser before the court and pleaded to place him on a seven-day remand in the case.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Afzal Naser from his residence in Mirpur DOHS on March 30, 2026.

According to the case documents, Mahmudul Hasan joined a procession of anti-discrimination student movement on August 5, 2024, in Azampur area under Uttara East Police Station. The procession came under attack, and Hasan got shot. He was rushed to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Govt Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead.

The case was filed on September 26, 2024, with Uttara East Police Station.
