Three-month ban imposed on fishing in Kaptai Lake

RANGAMATI, April 20, 2026 (BSS) - The Rangamati district administration has imposed a three-month ban on fishing in Kaptai Lake to ensure safe breeding, reproduction and natural growth of fish.

The decision was taken unanimously at a meeting on the imposition of restrictions on fishing and marketing in Kaptai Lake, organized by the district administration this afternoon.

According to the decision, all kinds of fishing, transportation, and marketing of fish in the lake will remain suspended for three months from 12:00 am on April 24 until further notice.

Chaired by Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Nazma Ashrafi, the meeting was attended by Senior Scientific Officer of Fisheries Research Institute Ishtiaq Haider, Commander of Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) Md. Foyez Al Karim, Assistant Superintendent of Naval Police (Chattogram Region) Abu Md. Dilwar Hasan Inam, Additional Superintendent of Police Rangamati Md. Jasim Uddin Chowdhury, District Fisheries Officer Mizanur Rahman, and representatives of fishermen and fishing communities.

The meeting also decided to inform the public about the ban through announcements on roads and waterways. At the same time, mobile court drives will continue in Kaptai Lake to prevent illegal fishing.

Deputy Commissioner Nazma Ashrafi said the ban has been imposed to ensure proper breeding, reproduction, and growth of fish in the lake during the current season. During the restriction period, food grains will be distributed by the government through VGF cards among registered fishermen dependent on the lake.
