IEDs, anti-personnel mines detected, flammable chemicals seized at Naikhongchhari border

DHAKA, April 10, 2026 (BSS) - Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detected improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and anti-personnel mines along the Naikhongchhari border in Bandarban and seized a significant quantity of flammable chemical substances in separate operations.

According to a BGB press release, a patrol team from Naikhongchhari Battalion (11 BGB), under the Ramu Sector, conducted a special operation on April 9 in the Chaipara area between border pillars 53 and 54 along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. During the drive, the patrol team spotted 4-5 suspected individuals.

When challenged, they fled into nearby hilly terrain, leaving behind several bags.

Upon searching the area, BGB recovered five anti-personnel mines, five suspected IEDs, one metal detector, one solar panel, dry food items, a mobile phone, a power bank, and civilian clothing.

The seized explosives have been secured with sandbags and marked with red flags.

Movement in the area has been temporarily restricted to ensure public safety, while additional patrols have been intensified.

Coordination is underway to deploy an army bomb disposal unit to safely neutralize the devices.

A general diary (GD) has been filed with Naikhongchhari Police Station.

Lieutenant Colonel Md. Faizul Kabir, Commanding Officer of Naikhongchhari Battalion, stated that BGB remains on high alert to address multidimensional security challenges along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

He noted an increasing risk of IED and mine placement, as well as the smuggling of flammable chemicals, which pose a threat to national security.

The BGB has strengthened intelligence activities, increased patrols, and continues coordinated operations to counter such threats.

In a separate operation on the same day, a patrol team from Cox's Bazar Battalion (34 BGB), under the Baishfari BOP, conducted a drive near border pillar 37/2-S in an orchard area.

The team seized 3 kg of flammable powder, 3 kg of Mepox (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide), 3 rolls of nylon fabric, and 3 liters of flammable liquid, all found abandoned.

The seized chemical substances are being sent to the Chattogram Divisional Chemical Laboratory for test.

Further legal action will be taken based on the results.

The BGB reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring border security, preventing sabotage, and safeguarding national sovereignty.

The force stated that such operations will continue to protect the country and its people.
