RAJSHAHI, Aug 31, 2026 (BSS)- Emphasis has been placed on ensuring public awareness, dissemination of accurate information, and technical support to increase the use of rooftop solar power to face the energy crisis, reduce electricity costs, and ensure sustainable urbanization.
 
This information was shared while presenting the findings of a research survey on solar power at a workshop titled "Benefits of Rooftop Solar Power: Public Knowledge, Practical Application and What Needs to be Done" held this afternoon in the conference room of the Rajshahi Zila Parishad.
 
The workshop was jointly organized by Poriborton, Coastal Livelihood and Environmental Action Network (CLEAN), and Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development (BWGED).
 
In the survey, opinions were taken from people of various classes and professions living in areas under 10 local government institutions across the country, including Rajshahi and Chapainawabganj. 

It shows that although 87 percent of respondents know about solar power and rooftop solar power, only 64 percent are aware of its benefits.
 
In addition, only 21 percent think that rooftop solar power is economically profitable, and 28 percent think that solar panels are not effective in the long term.
 
The organizers said that although people are familiar with solar power, there are still misconceptions about its economic benefits, long-term effectiveness, and practical potential.
 
To dispel these misconceptions, it is necessary to increase technical support along with public awareness and information dissemination.
 
At the workshop, emphasis was given on the use of rooftop solar power in various places including government buildings, markets, street lights, and parks to tackle load-shedding. 

At the same time, the organizers opined that if necessary policy and institutional support is ensured, the use of renewable energy can be further expanded in Rajshahi.
 
Present at the workshop were Administrator of Rajshahi Zila Parishad Advocate Ershad Ali Isha, and Chief Executive Officer of Rajshahi Zila Parishad Umme Fatima.

In addition, representatives of the concerned organizations, people of various classes and professions at the local level, and officials of the Zila Parishad were present.
