SHARIATPUR, March 16, 2026 (BSS)- National Parliament Whip and MP for Shariatpur-3 Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Opu today inaugurated the excavation work of the Pokhomshar Canal in Nager Para Union of Gosairhat Upazila.

The programme was launched under the canal excavation, re-excavation and renovation initiative announced by the government as part of the special priority projects of the Prime Minister and the EGPP programme.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed said martyred President Ziaur Rahman had first undertaken canal excavation programmes to overcome the country’s food crisis.

“Despite the remarkable success of the initiative, the previous government discontinued it, which turned the country into a desert,” he added.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has undertaken a fresh canal excavation programme, he noted.

He assured that within the next two years he would complete development activities in every union of Shariatpur district with the cooperation of the people.

Shariatpur Deputy Commissioner chaired the event while Gosairhat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nusrat Ara Khanam delivered the welcome address.

At the end of the ceremony, Mia Nuruddin Ahmed formally inaugurated the programme by cutting soil with his own hands. 

Later, the guests planted three fruit-bearing trees beside the canal.
