DHAKA, Mar 14, 2026 (BSS)- State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam has said closed jute mills across the country will be reopened to increase employment opportunities.

He said this while inspecting the activities and progress of the Pirojpur Textile Vocational Institute project today, a press release said.

The state minister said jute is closely intertwined with the country’s heritage, culture and way of life, but it has fallen behind in recent times. Reopening the closed jute mills is one of the government’s electoral pledges, he added.

“In line with that commitment, under the leadership of the Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, we will diversify jute products and create employment opportunities,” he said.

Shariful Alam said although the current government is still new, it is taking various initiatives so that visible results can be achieved within a short period of time.

At the same time, steps are being taken to increase the production of jute and jute seeds, reopen closed mills and factories, and generate employment, he added.

The state minister also noted that plastic remains banned since 2001 and said the government would resume campaign to make people aware against the use of plastic products and encourage using jute and jute-products.

He said initiatives are already underway to ensure that ever yday products used in various government offices are made of jute.

Among others, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute Bilkis Jahan Rimi and local leader were present.
