SYLHET, Feb 14, 2026 (BSS)- Newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Sylhet-6 constituency Advocate Emran Ahmed Chowdhury has pledged to work with his rival to develop the area.
Emran Ahmed Chowdhury, a BNP candidate and also the General Secretary of Sylhet district BNP, won by a margin of 8,348 votes defeating Jamaat candidate Md. Selim Uddin.
Emran Ahmed Chowdhury bagged 109,917 votes with Paddy Sheaf symbol while his nearest rival Jamaat candidate secured 101,569 votes.
Talking to BSS at returning officer’s office, Emran Chowdhury said he wants to work together with his rival for the development of the area.
He mentioned that they known each other since their student life and participated together in various movements including in the fight to dislodge the autocrat.
“We do not want to remain stuck in the past, we want to build new politics and create a new path for future,” he said.
“My relationship with him remains as before. I believe he will cooperate with us in the coming days,” he added.
Regarding expatriates, he said he feels deeply indebted to them and has a special bond with them. Expatriates supported me and my party during difficult times. Many expatriates returned home to vote in this election. I will always remember their contribution and will try to raise their issues and concerns in the parliament,” he said.
Emran Chowdhury said the region’s communication system is very poor. Although the airport carries an international title, it does not meet international standards in practice. The railway lines are also in very poor condition,” he said adding that these issues will get priority attention.
