DINAJPUR, Feb 13, 2026 (BSS) - Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate Dr AZM Zahid Hossain has been elected as a Member of Parliament from the Dinajpur-6 constituency in the 13th National Parliament election, securing a decisive victory.
Dr Zahid, a standing committee member of the BNP, won the seat covering Hakimpur, Birampur, Ghoraghat and Nawabganj upazilas by a large margin, according to unofficial results from 199 polling centers across the four upazilas.
According to results published, Dr Zahid received 205,118 votes. His nearest rival, independent candidate Anorul Islam, who contested with the scale symbol, secured 190,703 votes.
Reacting to his victory, Dr Zahid expressed gratitude to voters across party lines for electing him in what he described as a fair, impartial and peaceful election.
"I am very happy. The responsibility that the people have given me after a long political journey is a great honor for me," he said on Thursday night. "I want to protect the trust that the people of Dinajpur-6 constituency have placed in me. My first commitment will be to develop the area, establish peace, and ensure the rights of the people."
Speaking to leaders, activists and supporters who gathered at his residence in Motihara village of Nawabganj upazila after Jumma prayers on Friday, Dr Zahid said the election had brought new responsibilities.
"Until now, I had no formal responsibility towards the people of this area. After being elected, the responsibility to work for everyone has come upon me. I will try my best to fulfill that responsibility," he said.
Dr Zahid said that the constituency faces economic challenges, particularly unemployment among youth and the needs of working women.
"In the four upazilas, about 70,000 women are engaged in various professions. I have heard about their needs. Many young people are unemployed and require job opportunities," he said.
He pledged to work toward improving communication systems and addressing long-standing issues in the agriculture-dependent region to enhance the living standards of the people.
Calling for patience and cooperation, he urged party leaders, activists and residents at all levels to work together for the area's development.
