DHAKA, Jan 19, 2026 (BSS) - BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the sacrifice of Asaduzzaman Asad, one of the student leaders who led the anti-Ayub mass movement in 1969, will remain a source of inspiration in the struggle to protect democracy.
"It's our bounden duty to dedicate ourselves to building a prosperous Bangladesh by fully realizing the democratic social system for which Asad sacrificed his life. To that end, we must be firmly determined to establish democracy and the just rights of the people. Let this be our solemn pledge on Shaheed Asad Day," he said in a statement marking the Asad Day.
Fakhrul said, "On Shaheed Asad Day, I pay deep respect to the memory of the great martyr Asaduzzaman Asad of the mass movement of 1969. At the same time, I pray for the forgiveness of his departed soul."
Under the initiative of 1990 DUCSU and Shaheed Asad Parishad, on the occasion of Shaheed Asad Day, floral tributes will be paid at the Shaheed Asad Memorial in front of the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College at 8:00am tomorrow.
Leaders of '90 DUCSU and Shaheed Asad Parishad will be present at the event. This information was disclosed in a press release signed by Khairul Kabir Khokon, General Secretary (GS) of '90 Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) and Joint Secretary General of BNP.
