DHAKA, Dec 30, 2025 (BSS) - The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of former prime minister, veteran politician and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

In a message of condolence issued today, the trade body described her as a pioneer of the democratic movement and an uncompromising leader dedicated to national sovereignty and the rights of the people.

BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan expressed that the entire garment industry family is deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of what he termed a "timeless patriotic leader".

He emphasized that her death creates an irreparable void in the national life.

Specifically, he noted that her sincere efforts and courageous decisions regarding the global expansion of the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector will remain as permanent milestones in the industry's history.

The BGMEA recalled her pioneering role in building a strong economic foundation for Bangladesh.

The association highlighted that during her tenure as Prime Minister, she placed special emphasis on the RMG sector, providing supportive tax and duty policies and administrative cooperation to streamline trade.

One of the most significant contributions noted by the BGMEA was her focus on female education and the introduction of tuition-free education.

This initiative created the foundation for transforming a large segment of the female population into a skilled workforce, which ensured the extensive participation of women in the garment industry and led to a revolutionary change in women's empowerment.

The BGMEA stated that her contributions to the overall development of Bangladesh, the protection of democracy, and the economic liberation of the masses will never be forgotten.

The association prayed for the eternal peace of her soul and offered deep condolences to her bereaved family, noting that her political wisdom and patriotism would be written in gold letters in the history of the nation.
