RANGPUR, Dec 29, 2025 (BSS) - Jamaat-e-Islami candidate vice-principal ATM Azam Khan has withdrawn from the election in support of National Citizens Party (NCP) member-secretary and candidate Akhtar Hossen for Rangpur-4 (Pirgachha and Kawnia) constituency.
Vice-principal ATM Azam Khan confirmed his decision to withdraw from the election to local reporters over the phone on Monday afternoon.
The very popular Jamaat-e-Islami leader from Rangpur-4 constituency has expressed his support and good wishes to NCP member-secretary Akhtar Hossain for the decision to reach an alliance seat agreement.
Azam Khan said, "In the larger interest of the party's central committee and the alliance, I have decided to withdraw from the election...Alhamdulillah. As per the party's decision, my and our party’s support for alliance partner NCP's Akhtar Hossen will continue."
ATM Azam Khan is a tested leader of Jamaat-e-Islami and its Rangpur Metropolitan Ameer. He is a member of the central Majlis-e-Shura of Jamaat-e-Islami.
He is the vice-principal of the local Merura Islamia Dwimukhi Fazil (Degree) Madrasa in Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur.
The Rangpur-4 constituency consists of Kawnia and Pirgachha upazilas. Since independence, the Awami League has won this constituency six times, the Jatiya Party four times and the BNP one time.
This time, NCP central member-secretary Akhtar Hossen, a resident of Madhupur village, will contest this constituency.
Akhtar Hossen studied law at Dhaka University from where his political career began.
In 2018, he went on a solo hunger strike to protest the question leak of the admission test, which made him nationally known.
Earlier, Akhtar Hossen was the vice-president of Bangladesh Chhatra Adhikar Parishad and the president and general secretary of the organization's Dhaka University unit. He was the founder of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti.
Akhtar Hossen is a former social service secretary of DUCSU and one of the faces of the anti-fascist movement, who did not give up even under police repression.
He has made outstanding contributions to the July Movement. This is the first time this young politician is contesting the national parliamentary election.
