TANGAIL, Dec 20, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku today said BNP has repeatedly restored democracy whenever it has stumbled in the country, upholding democratic values.

"Politics is for the people. Disregarding the people cannot sustain any political force. Democracy must be nurtured to keep it on the right path, and BNP has done this time and again to protect democratic values," he said.

Tuku was addressing a doa mahfil and exchange meeting organised by the Tangail District Business Unity Council at noon.

He said BNP is the only political party that has consistently led movements with public participation to safeguard democracy.

Recalling history, he said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman played a decisive role in the Liberation War by declaring independence and taking up arms against the occupation forces.

He added that former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia led the movement against autocracy, while the 2024 mass movement witnessed unity beyond party lines under the leadership of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

President of the Tangail District Business Unity Council Abul Kalam Mostafa Labu presided over the doa mahfil.

Former acting general secretary of Tangail district BNP Mahmudul Haque Sanu and District Distributor Owners' Association President Shamimur Rahman Khan Shamim, among others, spoke at the programme.

Special prayers were offered seeking Begum Khaleda Zia's good health and long life, and eternal peace of the departed soul of Osman Hadi.
