TIB holds environment-focused training for judges

DHAKA, Dec 12, 2025 (BSS) - Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) organized a day-long training on Thursday aimed at enhancing judges' capacity to enforce environmental laws and ensure justice.

The workshop, held at TIB's Dhanmondi office in consultation with the Supreme Court and supported by the Law Ministry, focused on climate-related dispute resolution, international and constitutional environmental laws, and judicial skills, according to a TIB press release.

Titled "Climate Change and Environment-related Cases, Justice and Rule of Law", the training brought together 25 participants, including district and sessions judges, metropolitan judges, senior judicial magistrates, and Law Ministry officials.

Dr. Shawkat Alam from Macquarie University and Dr. Muhammad Ikramul Haq from Dhaka University, conducted the sessions, covering rule of law, global environmental principles, climate law applications and judicial remedies in Bangladesh.

Participants took part in group exercises addressing river pollution control, industrial waste monitoring, forest conservation, and climate adaptation strategies for coastal communities. Certificates were distributed at the end of the program.

Speaking at the event, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman emphasized that, according to international assessments, the effective implementation of environmental laws and the enhancement of skills among judges in environmental courts are critically important.

TIB said it will continue such capacity-building initiatives to strengthen judicial expertise in environmental matters.
