RAJSHAHI, Dec 11, 2025 (BSS) - Two-year-old Sajid Hossain, who slipped into a shaft on Wednesday noon, was rescued tonight.
The baby was quickly taken to Tanore Upazila Health Complex by ambulance. However, Dr Barnabas Hasdak, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, said the baby was brought dead to the hospital.
Fire Service teams dug 42 feet down and finally found the baby at 09:07pm tonight.
The tragedy unfolded around 1 pm on Wednesday in Pachandar Union under Tanore upazila, where the child had been walking with his mother Runa Khatun.
Upon being informed, several fire service teams immediately joined the rescue operation.
A special camera was lowered into the shaft but became stuck around 35 feet. Oxygen was continuously supplied into the pipe from Wednesday afternoon and rescuers explored several strategies to trace Sajid's exact position, said witnesses.
Rajshahi Fire Service Assistant Director Didarul Alam told BSS that the initial rescue was slowed because soil had fallen into the pipe during villagers' early attempts.
Tanore Police Station officer-in-charge Shahinuzzaman said three Fire Service units, assisted by the Army, police and upazila administration, were working non-stop. Hundreds of people gathered around the rescue site, many praying with raised hands while others watched in silence as excavators carved through tough soil.
