River Police seize huge illegal nets, 302 detained

DHAKA, Dec 11, 2025 (BSS) - The River Police have recovered a large quantity of banned fishing nets, fish, fish fry and jelly-mixed shrimp during a week-long nationwide drive conducted to protect fisheries resources and ensure safety along the waterways.

According to an official press release issued today, the force carried out operations in different parts of the country, during which 302 persons were detained in connection with the recoveries.

During the drives, law enforcers seized 3,06,19,965 metres of illegal nets, 3,990 kilograms of fish, 20 kilograms of Pangas fry, 350 kilograms of jelly-mixed shrimp, and destroyed 186 clusters of unauthorised river structures.

In addition, cases were filed against 90 bulkheads in the naval court for operating without valid documents, while one dredger was seized.

The press release further said that 91 cases were filed during the operation, including 62 under the fisheries law, 20 for reckless navigation, four unnatural death cases, one theft case, one robbery case, and two extortion cases.

The seized illegal nets and jelly-mixed shrimp were destroyed, the fish fry were released into the water, and the remaining fish were distributed among orphanages, the release added.
