RANGPUR, Dec 10, 2025 (BSS) - National Citizen Party (NCP) today announced 
Al-Mamun and Akhter Hossen as the candidates for Rangpur-1 and Rangpur-4 
parliamentary constituencies ahead of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad Election 
schedule accouchement.
 
In the first phase of declaring party-nominated candidates, NCP announced 
candidates for two of the six constituencies in Rangpur today. Candidates may 
be announced for the remaining four seats of the district in the next phase. 
 
Both of the announced candidates Al-Mamun and Akhter Hossen are student 
leaders of the front-line July warriors.
 
NCP announced candidates for 125 seats in the first phase after a press 
conference at its temporary central office at Bangla Motor in the capital on 
Wednesday. 
 
The party will contest this election under the 'Shapla Kali' symbol. 
 
While announcing the list of candidates, NCP member-secretary Akhter Hossen 
said that qualified, clean and people-oriented leadership is being brought 
forward with the aim of establishing positive changes, good governance and 
accountability in national politics. 
 
He said that nominations for more seats will be announced very soon in the 
second phase. 
 
The remaining seats will be finalized after considering field-level surveys, 
popularity, party activity and history of work in the public interest. 
 
According to official sources, Rangpur-1 constituency consists of Gangachara 
upazila and Wards 1 to 9 of Rangpur City Corporation. 
 
Hussein Muhammad Ershad's Jatiya Party had built a stronghold in this 
constituency since 1986 with the power of single-handed dominance.
 
But the seat was captured by Awami League candidate Asaduzzaman Bablu in the 
much-questioned 12th parliamentary election of 2024. 
 
This time, the NCP has nominated Al Mamun, former central president of the 
Jatiya Party's student organisation Jatiya Chhatra Samaj, for this 
constituency. 
On December 2 last, the Rangpur district committee was approved by making Al 
Mamun the convener and Ershad Hossain the member secretary. Currently, he 
serves the NCP's Rangpur district committee as its convener. 

Al Mamun was a student of Dhaka University (du) and was actively involved in 
the July movement. After the fall of the fascist regime, he stepped down from 
the leadership of the Jatiya Chhatra Samaj. 
 
During the 24-day July-August student movement, Al Mamun's voice, holding a 
microphone, was heard chanting the slogan 'Abu Sayeed's blood cannot be 
wasted' in the capital's central Shaheed Minar and Dhaka University areas. 
 
In appreciation of his courageous role, the central leaders of the NCP have 
nominated Al Mamun as candidate for the Rangpur-1 parliamentary constituency 
after entrusting him with the responsibility of Rangpur convener. 
 
Meanwhile, Rangpur-4 constituency comprises Kawnia and Pirgachha upazilas on 
the banks of the Teesta River.
 
Since independence, Awami League has won this constituency six times, Jatiya 
Party four times and BNP one time. This time, NCP Central member secretary 
Akhter Hossen will contest this constituency. 
 
Although the party officially nominated him today, the party's convener Md 
Nahid Islam had earlier announced Akhter Hossen as the candidate for Rangpur-
4 constituency during the 'July Padoyatra' in Rangpur on July 1 this year. 
 
Akhter Hossain is a resident of Madhupur area of Kawnia upazila. He studied 
law at Dhaka University where his political career began. 
 
In 2018, Akhter Hossen went on a solo hunger strike to protest the question 
paper leak of the admission test, which made him nationally known. 
 
Earlier, Akhter Hossen was the vice-president of Bangladesh Chhatra Adhikar 
Parishad and the president and general secretary of the organisation's Dhaka 
University unit. 
 
He was the founder of 'Ganotantrik Chhatra Shakti'. 
 
Akher Hossen, former social service secretary of DUCSU and one of the 
prominent faces of the anti-fascist July movement, did not give up even under 
police torture and oppression. 
 
He has made an outstanding contribution to the July Movement. This is the 
first time, this young politician is contesting the Jatiya Sangsad Election 
with his clean image as a representative of the young generation.
