Lack of good practice holding back livestock sector

DHAKA, Nov 27, 2025 (BSS)- In lack of a good practice the country is lagging behind in ensuring safe livestock products despite self-sufficiency in milk, egg, and meat production.

It was told in a policy dialogue titled ‘Implementing Good Agricultural Practices for sustainable expansion of the livestock sector in Bangladesh’ at the PKSF Bhaban-1 in the capital, 

Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) organized the dialogue with a view to promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in the country’s livestock sector, said a press release.

Speakers said formulating a national policy on Good Agricultural Practices is essential for strengthening Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the global market.

Deputy Director of the Department of Livestock Services Shariful Haque was present as the chief guest while Deputy Managing Director of PKSF Dr Akond Mohammad Rafiqul Islam was in the chair.

Dr A K M Ahsan Kabir, Professor of Animal Husbandry, Bangladesh Agricultural University in the keynote paper said adherence to global Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in the country’s livestock sector remains insufficient. 

Shariful Haque noted that developing context-appropriate standards and ensuring proper certification mechanisms would greatly benefit farmers.

Additional Director of the Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute Dr ABM Mustanur Rahman emphasized on the need for developing and widely promoting a ‘Good Agricultural Practices for Livestock Guideline’ tailored to the country’s context in order to strengthen the sustainability of the country’s livestock sector. 

Dr Rafiqul Islam said PKSF is implementing a range of innovative initiatives across the country with micro entrepreneurs. He said, formulating a national Good Agricultural Practices guideline for livestock entrepreneurs would play a leading role in advancing the development of this sector.

Faculty members from various agricultural universities, officials from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council and representatives from private organizations working in the livestock sector attended the dialogue.
