DHAKA, Nov 27, 2025 (BSS) - BNP Standing Committee Member Nazrul Islam Khan today said Shaheed Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, martyred during the anti-Ershad movement in 1990, embodied the same spark of resistance seen in the July Uprising martyrs Abu Sayed, Mugdho and Wasim.

"Dr Milon was a spark of fire (Agnisphulinga), just like the brave sons of the July Uprising. That spark ignited the gunpowder of our consciousness, resentment and anger. The explosion that followed ultimately brought down the dictator who clung to power for nearly 15 years," he said.

Nazrul Islam made the remarks while addressing a discussion organised by the DUCSU of the 90s and the All-Party Students' Unity, marking the 35th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Milon.

He said the previous misrule had created deep frustration across society and the martyrs of the July Uprising ignited that public anger, just as Dr Milon did in 1990.

Speaking as special guest, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the courts are now operating independently under the Interim Government, which has handed down a 21-year prison sentence to Sheikh Hasina in the plot allocation scam cases.

"There is no scope for any political party to influence the courts. The trials are being conducted under an independent system," he said.

Rizvi also criticised the Jatiya Party, saying its leadership was now speaking about lack of freedom of expression despite previously cooperating with the former government.

He said the previous regime and its allies jointly shaped an economic model "Hasinomics", marked by large loan defaults and repeated borrowing without repayment.

He added non-performing loans now stand at Tk 6.5 lakh crore and the next elected government must act to overcome this situation, while the Interim Government has already begun some initial measures.

BNP Chairperson's Adviser Amanullah Aman presided over the discussion, which was moderated by BNP Joint Secretary General and Narsingdi District BNP President Khairul Kabir Khokon.
