DHAKA, Nov 26, 2025 (BSS) - Shaheed Dr Milon Day will be observed across the country tomorrow, commemorating the 35th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, the then joint secretary general of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA).

On this day in 1990, Dr Milon, who was also a teacher of Dhaka Medical College (DMC), was killed by thugs of the then dictatorial government near the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University at the height of the anti-autocracy movement.

The sacrifice of Dr Milon transformed the movement into a mass upsurge that prompted the fall of the autocratic regime, paving the way for restoration of democracy in the country.

Marking the day, BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman issued message recalling the supreme sacrifice of Dr Milon for restoring democracy.

In his message, Tarique Rahman said Shaheed Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon was a fearless soldier in the movement to restore democracy.

He said, "The ultimate sacrifice made by brave Shaheed Dr Milon in the movement to restore democracy revitalized the lost democracy. Through his self-sacrifice, the nine-year-long anti-Ershad autocratic movement for democracy surged towards its final victory."

The BNP acting Chairman said, "Dr Milon's firm commitment was to overthrow the autocracy and re-establish the democratic rights of the people. He brought about the victory of democracy through the sacrifice of his blood. This path led to the fall of the autocracy in the country and the re-establishment of democracy. A new journey of democracy began under the leadership of the national leader, Begum Khaleda Zia."

Like previous years, different political and social organizations will observe the day through various programmes.

The events include offering Fateha and special prayers, placing wreaths at the grave of Dr Milon on the Dhaka Medical College campus.
