DHAKA, May 30, 2025 (BSS) - The two city corporations of Dhaka have decided to set up a total of 17 makeshift cattle markets, along with two permanent ones, for selling sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
"We will give the final decision tomorrow after getting the evaluation report of the tender committee," Administrator of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mohammad Azaz told BSS here today.
He said the tender evaluation committee will give their report tomorrow after properly scrutinizing the tender documents for nine makeshift cattle markets on the occasion of Eid.
He said the DNCC will set up nine temporary cattle markets, supplementing its permanent facility at Gabtoli, while Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) plans to arrange eight temporary markets in addition to its permanent one at Sarulia.
Talking to BSS, Chief Executive Officer of DSCC Dr. M. Zillur Rahman said that the DSCC received responses from six bidders for setting up makeshift cattle markets.
"We have sent three tender documents to the ministry for a final decision, as we received bids below the government-set rate," he said.
According to information from the city corporations, the makeshift cattle markets will operate for five days, including the Eid day, allowing the sale and purchase of sacrificial animals at designated locations.
The city corporations emphasized that no makeshift cattle markets will be allowed outside the approved locations.
They urged all sellers of sacrificial animals to bring and sell their cattle only at the designated marketplaces.
Officials from both city corporations assured that security measures will be in place, and leaseholders will face punitive action for any violation of the government's guidelines.
Under the DNCC's jurisdiction, the permanent market at Gabtoli will operate alongside temporary markets in Bosila, Mirpur, Khilkhet, Badda, etc.
In DSCC areas, markets will be set up at locations such as the open space of North Shahjahanpur Maitree Sangha Club, the east side of Donia College, Sadek Hossain Khoka Field, etc.
Both city corporations have pledged to ensure proper management of the markets and strict monitoring of waste disposal during the Eid days.
The two corporations called for tenders to finalize the leasing of these markets. The lease for each site will be awarded to the highest bidder.
Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has already asked all concerned to ensure proper security at the cattle markets.
He asked the law enforcers and administrators of the city corporations to take appropriate measures to ensure foolproof security in the capital.
"Ansar personnel will be deployed alongside bringing all the cattle markets under CCTV coverage and constant surveillance and monitoring for ensuring security at the cattle markets," the Home Adviser said.
