DHAKA, Sept 02, 2026 (BSS) - Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman today stressed the need to prevent the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying the technology is creating new challenges for the judiciary and urging judges to remain vigilant and exercise their own wisdom and judicial discretion.

"AI can be used to imitate a person's voice, alter or superimpose images, and make misleading information appear credible to people. It can even influence human thoughts and decision-making. Therefore, an effective regulatory framework needs to be developed to address the risks and misuse of AI," he said.

The law minister made the remarks as the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the five-day executive training programme titled "Bangladesh AI Governance Summer School 2026" at the Asiatic Society Bangladesh auditorium in the capital this afternoon.

The programme was organised by Dhaka University in collaboration with Legalised Education Bangladesh and The Society for Justice and AI (SJAI).

The law minister said Bangladesh, along with the rest of the world, has entered the era of AI. However, the risks associated with the use of AI and the regulatory framework required to address them have yet to be properly developed.

He said it is a matter of concern how AI may guide and influence people in the days ahead, sometimes leading them in the right direction and at other times towards misleading or erroneous paths.

The minister further said attempts to influence or mislead a judge through AI could have an impact on judicial decisions. Therefore, judges need to be aware of AI first and foremost. While analysing evidence and reaching proper conclusions, they must also carefully consider whether any information or material before them is AI-generated or AI-dependent.

"New aspects of law have been revealed at different times through judicial interpretation. AI has similarly presented a new challenge to the judiciary. Until appropriate laws and regulatory frameworks are enacted, judges will have to rely on their own wisdom and judicial discretion," the law minister added.

Md Asaduzzaman said the government has no plan to ban AI. Rather, the government will remain vigilant to ensure its positive use while preventing its misuse.

Welcoming the organisers' initiative, he said cooperation from all concerned is needed to formulate effective laws on AI. He urged the stakeholders to prepare a draft on the issue and submit it to the government at the earliest.

Deputy Attorney General Barrister Tasnova Shelly moderated the programme, which was also addressed by Professor Dr Borhan Uddin Khan and Professor Dr Mohammad Ekramul Haque of the Department of Law at Dhaka University.
