DHAKA, June 14, 2026 (BSS) - Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been arrested by the police of the United Arab Emirates in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over allegations of acquiring assets beyond known sources of income.
Deputy Director of the Public Relations Department at the ACC headquarters Md. Akhtarul Islam confirmed the information to BSS today. Applications for Interpol Red Notices had been submitted in two cases against Benazir.
One involved the acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income, while the other concerned passport forgery. ACC Deputy Director Akhtarul Islam said a Red Notice had been issued against former IGP Benazir Ahmed in the case over illicit wealth.
"Two applications for Interpol Red Notices were submitted, and he has been arrested in the case related to the acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income," he said.
Earlier, at a media briefing at the ACC headquarters, he said investigations into four more cases against Benazir Ahmed are currently underway.
Altogether, allegations involving nearly Tk 76 crore in assets beyond known sources of income have been brought against him.
He also said the ACC is maintaining continuous communication with the relevant agencies, institutions and individuals concerned to bring the arrested former police chief back to the country.
