The project to drill four appraisal-cum-development wells in the Titas and Kamta fields has been undertaken to increase gas production from domestic sources, reduce dependence on imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) and strengthen energy security.

The project was approved at an Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) meeting on February 2. According to the administrative order issued on February 20, the government will finance Tk 872.20 crore of the project, which costs Tk 1,255 crore, while BGFCL will provide Tk 382.80 crore.

Under the project, activities include drilling three wells in the Titas field and one in the Kamta field, appointing foreign consultants, constructing a gas gathering pipeline in Titas, and setting up a processing plant in Kamta, along with associated work.

Upon implementation of the project, the target has been set to supply approximately 55 million cubic feet of gas per day to the national grid by June next year in the first year.

After the drilling and testing of the Kamta-2 well, it is expected that approximately 10 million cubic feet of gas per day could be added to the national grid within about 120 days.

Meanwhile, the drilling of the Titas-28 well is currently in its final stages. Upon its completion, drilling work on the Titas-29 well will begin. At the same time, drilling operations of the Kamta-2 well have also commenced.
