DHAKA, July 27, 2021 (BSS) - Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder today laid emphasis on joint efforts and sincere involvement of member countries to build a sustainable food system to meet the existing challenges, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, economic recession, and climate change across the globe.

“Joint efforts and partnership of member countries are needed to build a tolerant food system to meet the existing challenges including climate change, conflict, instability, and economic recession at all levels from production to consumption,” he said.

He was speaking virtually at a high-level panel discussion on ‘Build Resilience to Vulnerabilities, Shocks, and Stress’ on the second day of the 3-day Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit held in Rome, Italy.

He said the ‘Bangladesh Delta Plan-2100’ is being implemented in the country to ensure long-term economic growth, water, and food security as well as environmental stability by overcoming the adverse effects of climate change.

“Through this Delta Plan, it will be possible to eradicate extreme poverty, and ensure sustainable food security,” he added.

The Food Minister highlighted Bangladesh’s progress and endeavors in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through agriculture, and food system transformation by 2030.

Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Bangladesh is a leading country in tackling the adverse effects of climate change, he said.

He underscored the need for more investment, research, and innovation in agriculture and food to meet the ongoing and upcoming challenges.

Gambian Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara, Spain’s Special Ambassador for Food Systems Gabriel Ferrero and Minister of Agriculture, Biosecurity, and Rural Communities Damien O’Connor also took part in the virtual event, among others.
