DHAKA, Aug 24, 2026 (BSS) – Bangladesh’s weather authorities predicted heavy downpour for next five days from this evening in southeastern, southwestern and northeastern regions alongside issuing cautionary signal no 3 in a scale of 10 for all seaports as a low pressure brewed in Bay of Bengal.  

“Light to moderate rain/thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at many places over Rangpur, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions,” a meteorology department bulletin said this evening.

It said the prediction was valid for 120 hours commencing 6 PM today and few places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna and Barishal divisions would as well experience “moderately heavy falls”.

The met office simultaneously asked fishing boats and trawlers to keep close to the shoreline and move with caution until further notice in view of the low pressure in the sea.

The flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), meanwhile, said “moderate-heavy to heavy rainfall” was expected over Sylhet, Mymensingh, Rangpur and Chattogram divisions and adjoining upstream areas during the next three days.

   
The FFWC said the low-pressure, located over the northwest Bay of Bengal, moved northwestward and was currently positioned over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining areas of India’s North Odisha and the northwest Bay of Bengal.

   
“The axis of monsoon troughs runs through Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Center of the low to Assam across southern part of Bangladesh. Monsoon is fairly active over Bangladesh and strong over North,” the met office, on the other hand, said.

   
The FFWC said during the last 24 hours, the water level of the Manu River in northeastern Sylhet exceeded its danger level while the water level of rivers in northwestern Ganges-Padma basin rivers have risen, which may continue to rise during the next five days.

   
According to the Centre water levels in most other rivers were remained static or rising at some points but were flowing below the danger level.
