DHAKA, Aug 23, 2026 (BSS) - Dhaka University (DU) today observed "Black Day" in a fitting manner, commemorating the mid-August 2007 assault and persecution of its teachers, students, and employees.
To mark the day, teachers, students, officers, and staff of the university wore black badges. A discussion meeting was held at 11:00 am at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) auditorium.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam presided over the meeting, while Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Admin) Prof. Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane, Treasurer Prof. Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Emeritus Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Arts Dr. Sadrul Amin, Provost Standing Committee Convener Prof. Dr. Md. Aminul Islam Bhuiyan, and Faculty of Arts Dean Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Sarkar addressed the event, among others.
Representatives from the DU Officers' Association, Employee Association, Technical Employee Association, and Fourth Class Employee Union also spoke.
Acting Registrar Munsi Shams Uddin Ahammad moderated the programme.
Addressing the event, VC Prof. Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam described the August 2007 incidents as a horrific chapter in the university's history, emphasizing that DU will never forget the torture inflicted upon its family members.
He noted that the Senate decided in 2009 to observe August 23 as "Black Day" to inspire future generations to stand against oppression and abuse of power.
Every year, DU observes August 23 as "Black Day" to remember the dehumanizing and repressive events that unfolded on campus from August 20 to 23, 2007.
