DHAKA, Aug 13, 2026 (BSS) - The government will import five more cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) having 16 million MMBtu to meet the growing energy demand in August.

"The proposed five additional LNG cargoes have been secured for August to maintain stability in the country's gas supply system," Director of Petrobangla AKM Mizanur Rahman told BSS here today.

He said the LNG cargoes will be brought from spot market, long-term and short-term contracts, adding, "Each cargo contains, on an average around 3.2 million MMBtu of LNG."

Rahman said the Petrobangla has taken preparation for brining nine cargoes contain around 28.8 million MMBtu LNG in August, while four of them arrived and remaining five are scheduled to arrive later this month.

According to Petrobangla information, one cargo will be brought under a long-term, five under short-term contracts and three from the spot market for the month of August. 

According to the shipment schedule, the state run Petrobangla official said that shipments are scheduled to arrive on August 17, 21, 23, 27 and 30.

In July, a total of 11 LNG cargoes were brought under long-term and short-term contracts and the spot market, containing around 35.2 million MMBtu of LNG.

According to Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company Limited (RPGCL), QatarEnergy of Qatar and OQ Trading, of Oman, supply LNG to Bangladesh under long-term contracts.

Besides, the UAE-based OQ Trading supplies LNG to Bangladesh under short-term contract.

Meanwhile, the government also procures LNG cargoes from the spot market every month, subject to approval of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase.
