DHAKA, June 14, 2026 (BSS) - The inaugural phase of 'Nazrul Year' will begin simultaneously across 64 districts and 74 remote and specialised upazilas of the country from June 18, featuring three days of colourful programmes.

The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has organised the nationwide opening events, which will run from June 18 to 20, marking the 127th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

The announcement was made at a press briefing held at the ministry's conference room by Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury today.

The minister said that in 1976, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman granted citizenship to Kazi Nazrul Islam. He also noted that during the tenure of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, several initiatives were taken to promote the poet's literary works and philosophy on a wider scale.

He added that the current government remains committed to spreading Nazrul's ideals of equality, humanity and secular values among the younger generation.

Outlining the key action plans for Nazrul Year (May 25, 2026 - May 25, 2027), the minister said a high-level national committee will be formed. Other initiatives include the creation of an official logo and poster for the year, preparation of a dedicated Nazrul Year calendar, and issuance of a commemorative postage stamp by the Postal Department.

The ministry also plans to strengthen research and archival work on Nazrul's literature, philosophy and music. In coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, efforts will be made to promote his works internationally, including through Bangladeshi missions abroad.
